On your route
Houtsaegerduinen: This natural area used to be an open, damp dune landscape. Today, the landscape has become much drier and overgrown with shrubs and young trees. Donkeys (and sometimes sheep) feel right at home here and are not bothered by nature-conscious walkers.
Land sailing: the very first land yacht race in the world took place in De Panne in 1909.
Westhoekreservaat viewpoint: here you get a unique view of the oldest nature reserve on the Belgian coast. Enjoy the impressive dune landscape.
The Westerpunt leads you up from the promenade until you tower above the beach, then brings you back down towards the lower beach or the sea wall. It symbolically connects the sea with the dunes, nature with the coast, and residents with one another.
Parking
The starting point is in the red zone, where you can park for a maximum of 2 hours.
Planning to walk a little longer? It is better to choose the green long-stay parking zones.
Toilets
Need a toilet? There are public toilets on your route:
- Town Hall
- Rear of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk
- Zeedijk West, near P. Bortierplein
Public transport
Coming by tram? The Centrum stop is closest to the start of this walk.
Vista Duinenpr8
This vista is a panoramic viewpoint inspired by nature, designed as a meeting place and rest point for residents, second-home owners and visitors. Like the Westerpunt, the vista is a place to pause, not an endpoint. It is an access point to the centre and to the dunes, where you encounter two completely contrasting landscapes. The vista forms a beautiful symbiosis between the two.
