Not just grass, moss and shrubs
The dry moss dunes and dune grasslands of the Oosthoekduinen are locally covered with tiny plants such as candytuft, biting stonecrop, dune star moss and various lichens. The slight decalcification of the soil is reflected in flora including burnet rose. The scrubland is varied too, with a rich mix of flowering blackthorn, hawthorn, spindle and wild privet.
Singing and fluttering friends
Birds such as the nightingale, common whitethroat, blackcap and willow warbler enjoy the Oosthoekduinen, so you can regularly hear them at work here. The small pearl-bordered fritillary flutters around, and you can also find the blue-winged grasshopper. Amphibians such as the European-protected great crested newt find safe shelter in the pools.
