This walk runs through the beautiful Calmeynbos. Calmeynbos is a deciduous woodland of 66 to 85 hectares, planted in 1902-1903 by agricultural engineer Maurice Calmeyn to show that forestry was possible in lime-rich coastal dunes. The woodland was planted partly on dunes and partly on fields, and has been protected since 1935.

A young dune woodland for everyone
Calmeynbos is a wonderful dune woodland for walking, mountain biking or horse riding. It is a lovely place to cool off on a warm summer’s day. Look closely and you might spot a golden oriole or a green woodpecker high in the trees. Or perhaps a cute ‘dunekeuntje’ (dune rabbit) will disappear into its well-hidden burrow right at your feet.
