The Sint-Audomaruskerk of Adinkerke is the mother church of the other two parish churches of De Panne. It is characteristic of the area between the dunes and the polder and has existed for more than 900 years, during which it has seen a lot.
The first Romanesque church of the fishing and farming village of 'Oyenkerke' was consecrated in 1120 by Blessed Jan van Waasten, bishop of Terwaan in present-day French Flanders, to whose diocese our region belonged at that time.
History
The church building in Adinkerke originally dates back to the Middle Ages. It was already a cruciform church with a crossing tower and was dedicated to Audomarus, a clergyman from Normandy. Around 1855, the current hall church was built in neo-Gothic style by architect Pierre François Buyck.
Architecture
The church is a neo-Gothic three-aisled hall church with a partly Romanesque and partly Gothic church tower. The tower (now the west tower) and the transept, partly made of iron sandstone, remain original to this day. The square tower consists of two unequal sections and a stubby spire. The lower section (up to the first drip mould) is Romanesque, the upper section Gothic. The west facade of the tower is marked by two large buttresses. Traces of the old gabled roofs are clearly visible along the sides of the tower. Over the course of history, the church was repeatedly damaged or destroyed. On the tower roof, you will see a cross and a weathercock. The cock reminds us of the Gospel story of Peter's denial of Christ when the cock crowed three times, so it is also the symbol of vigilance and penitence.
Interior
The church has an austere, plastered and white interior. The high choir is graced with beautiful carved oak wall panelling and seats. The high altar is made from white stone and is dedicated to Saint Audomarus. The stained glass windows are striking. These were added in 1953-54 and have a 'modern' look. The Sint-Audomaruskerk in Adinkerke has a number of beautiful church treasures.
